Tuesday, April 14- from Calzadilla de Cueza to Sahagun- 23 km. I'll start with supper last night. The one bar in the village was serving a typical peregrine supper. 3 choices for an entrée, 3 choices for a main meal, and 4 options for dessert. We were deciding where to sit when our pilgrim friends from Australia, Megan and Maureen, a mother-daughter combo arrived. We invited them to join us. A few minutes later Nico, a Belgian man joined us, and finally 10 minutes later a Brit n'amed David rounded up the eight person table. Luckily Monique and I were seated beside the two Aussie women so conversation was very fluid. Ron and Rémi were thoroughly entertained by the other two guests. Everyone chose a lentil soup to begin. Wow, it was a meal in itself. Add the bread and vino and were already quite satiated. Then the second course arrived. Quite a few of us had fish, one had chicken and Ron had pork ribs. Dessert is always quite funny: a yoghurt, an ice cream cone, a fruit, or some sort of custard. It was fun spending time with these pilgrims. Everyone has a story.

On the left is Maureen, moi, Ron, and Nico. On the right is Megan, Monique, Rèmi, and David.

Part of the route today was alongside the roadway. We missed the more scenic way. It was a flat surface most of the way today, but rocky, and sometimes hard on the bottom of the feet. There were many small villages along the way so we stopped quite frequently for a 5-10 minutes at a time.

We saw these cool houses built into the hills. They had chimneys, doors, and sometimes even a window. We didn't see anyone around though.

This stone reprints our departure from the Palencia province to the Leon province.

I couldn't believe that we were stopping on the road for a break. Rémi ate an orange.

We arrived at the Albergue at 2 pm. The lady working was just closing up.(siesta time). With a panicked "what" from our group, she told us that we could enter from the side door and that we could get settled and pay later. Phew, were we happy. The hostel is an old church that doubles as a tourist information center.

This is a rare pilgrim who is actually taller than Ron!

While walking through the city, we noticed that Ron would have a hard time living in some of the houses. We were happy to find a place to eat around 4:30 today as we had not eaten lunch and supper is always too late for us. We then went to the train station to buy tickets for tomorrow. We've decided to take the train to Léon tomorrow as the next few days have very boring routes, along the roadside and we are all ready for a day off after 15 days. It's 8:45 now and we are getting for bed soon.
